The field this course prepares you for already has an infrastructure: free courses, skilled-volunteering pipelines, job boards, professional communities, and funders. Learn

  • InnovateUS runs free self-paced courses and live workshops on innovation, data, and responsible AI for public-sector and civic-minded professionals, including a certificate course on responsible AI for public professionals.
  • NTEN is the nonprofit technology professional community. It offers professional certificates, a six-month Nonprofit Tech Readiness cohort, courses with scholarships, and a job board. Its Tech Accelerate instrument is the one your needs assessment runs on.
  • TechSoup Courses carries 200+ nonprofit tech skills courses, including free Microsoft Digital Skills Center courses that need no account. TechSoup itself is where nonprofits get discounted and donated software.
  • digital.gov hosts the federal government’s communities of practice (UX, web, plain language) and public events; anyone can join.
  • All Tech Is Human runs the Responsible Tech job board, a large Slack community, free responsible-AI short courses, and an annual summit.

Volunteer your skills

  • U.S. Digital Response places pro bono technologists and data people with state, local, and tribal governments. Volunteering here is a recognized on-ramp into civic-tech jobs.
  • DataKind matches data scientists with nonprofits for project work and runs DataDive events and local chapters.
  • INFORMS Pro Bono Analytics matches analytics volunteers with nonprofits for two-to-three-month projects.
  • Catchafire and Taproot Foundation are skills-based volunteering marketplaces spanning marketing, design, HR, and tech, useful when your contribution is professional skill rather than code.
  • 48in48 builds free websites for nonprofits in weekend sprints; the next global event runs October 2026.
  • Alliance of Civic Technologists is the successor network to Code for America’s local brigades (which were sunset in 2023) and the current entry point for local civic-tech volunteering.

Work in the field

  • Fast Forward accelerates early-stage tech nonprofits and runs the Tech Nonprofit Job Board, a job listing focused on organizations like your partner.
  • Code for America builds safety-net, tax, and justice technology with governments and posts open roles on its careers page.
  • Tech Matters builds open-source platforms for frontline social-sector organizations (the Aselo crisis-helpline platform, the Terraso land platform) and takes early-career contributors through its open roles and repositories.
  • Data.org runs data-and-AI fellowships, a capacity-building network for nonprofits, and a sector-specific jobs board.
  • PIT-UN, the public interest technology university network, runs career fairs, hackathons, and an annual summit; Michigan is a member.
  • Aspen Policy Academy runs a science and technology policy fellowship with a stipend; applications open each December.

Working inside tech teams

A product team splits decisions by role:

  • Product manager: what problem, for whom, in what order.
  • Engineer: feasibility, and the cost of change.
  • Designer: how the interaction works.
  • UX researcher: the evidence about users.
  • Data scientist: the metrics and models.
  • Trust and safety: how harm gets handled.
  • Policy and legal: what the product may do.

Product manager is the one role here with no credential gate: no license, no degree, no certificate to check. Social work training already does most of the job. A needs assessment is user research. An engagement interview is a user interview. Case coordination is stakeholder alignment. Program management, the budgets, metrics, and grant reports social workers produce, is roadmap and KPI ownership under a different name. Person-in-environment thinking is systems thinking. Social work is usually cast as the outside expert a product team consults; the credential gap says the profession can supply the product manager directly. What training doesn’t supply automatically is technical conversancy and prioritization habits, and the hiring market still defaults to computer science and MBA backgrounds.

Civic-tech roles run through Code for America’s careers page and U.S. Digital Response’s volunteer program, both listed above; USDR recruits for product and project management. Trust-and-safety hiring runs through the All Tech Is Human job board, listed under Learn. The most structured route into product management is an associate product manager (APM) program, a one-to-two-year rotation for early-career hires with no prior PM experience, such as Atlassian’s. Therapists in Tech runs a Slack community and job-matching events for mental-health professionals moving into digital mental-health roles; several of its own leaders are licensed clinical social workers.

There is a second track into these teams: AI governance. Companies building AI now hire for responsible AI program managers, AI governance leads, AI policy managers, model safety and red-team staff, and launch reviewers who sign off before a system ships. Social work training fits this role closely: the NASW Code of Ethics is already enforceable, documented risk assessment and safety planning is routine casework, and negotiating consent under a power imbalance is what an intake interview trains for, the daily substance of AI governance work under a different name. Microsoft’s Office of Responsible AI describes the function inside one company; IAPP’s AI Governance Professional certification is the credential for it, no engineering background required. Governance teams are often the first cut in a downturn, so an organization’s track record is worth checking before trusting its stated principles.

Inside a hospital or a government agency, the same skills sit inside procurement rules and compliance review instead of a startup’s product cycle.

When a nonprofit accepts one of the grants and credits described elsewhere on this page, someone inside has to hold its side of the collaboration: reading the terms, managing the vendor relationship, and making the calls the grant itself doesn’t make, the same product and governance work described above.

Funding programs and their fine print

Week 8’s lab runs a live teardown of one of these programs, and the descriptions below are deliberately short: the exercise is reading the actual terms yourself. Two questions travel across all of them. Does the program give cash or credits, and what does the funder get back?

For the critique itself, three starting points: the OpenAI Foundation coverage above, Nonprofit Quarterly on why nonprofit control of technology matters (the dependency and lock-in argument), and Tech Policy Press on “grantwashing” (small grants as manufactured legitimacy). Program terms change often, and the numbers you find may already differ from the ones here; noticing that is part of the assignment.
